Muthiriyar - Introduction



Mudiraj - Muthuraj - Koli constitute a major block of aboriginal Indians. They are descendants of the Bhils and are believed to have developed the Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro civilization in the Sindhu river belt. Bhil means Bow and its Dravidian word is Villu, the weapon of Srirama and also that of Arjuna. Mudirajus are hunters, fisherman, cultivators, soldiers and village administrative employees. A section of Mudirajus in ancient times looked after the water reservoirs in granitic areas.

Muthuraja/Muttaraiyar Community is one of the High/Dominate social group from the Indian state of Tamil Nadu concentrated around Trichy district.They are closely related to Sozhia Vellalar/Thondaimandala Mudaliar enjoying similar status. Muthurajas and Cholas are one and the same people as per Chola - Mutharayar Research Center, Tanjore and they were from vellalar background. While the common people were known as Vellalar, the royal clans were known as Cholas and Muthuraja/Mutharayars. Muthuraja along with Chola,Pandya & Chera were the royal subcastes of Vellalars.
